OnlineJobs.ph or an agency? An honest comparison

Two colleagues comparing printed documents while standing by a window

We are an agency. You should discount our opinion accordingly, so this article is written to be useful even after you have.

The short version: hiring direct is genuinely cheaper and genuinely more work. Which one wins depends on things about your business, not about the platforms.

What each one actually is

OnlineJobs.ph is a job board. You post a role, you receive applications, you screen, interview, hire, pay, manage and replace. The platform charges you a subscription to access candidates. After that, the relationship is between you and a person.

An agency recruits against your brief, presents a shortlist, employs or contracts the person, handles payroll and compliance, and stays involved — account management, quality checks, cover during absence, replacement if the fit is wrong.

You are not choosing between two ways of buying the same thing. You are choosing whether to do the employer’s job yourself.

The headline gap is real. What the table misses is your own time, and the cost of the failure cases.

Screening honestly takes 8 to 15 hours for one role — writing the brief, reading applications, running interviews, setting a test task, checking references. Price that at whatever your hour is worth.

Replacement is where direct hiring actually hurts. If someone leaves in month three, you do the entire process again from zero, and the work stops in the meantime. Through an agency that is a phone call.

When hiring direct is the better answer

Genuinely, and not as a courtesy:

  • You have hired and managed remote staff before. The skill transfers. If you already know how to write a brief, run a structured interview and onboard someone properly, you are paying an agency for something you can do.
  • The role is simple and low-risk. Data entry, basic admin, repetitive research. Less judgement required means less to get wrong in selection.
  • You have time to invest up front. Two weeks of your attention across screening and onboarding.
  • The budget is genuinely tight. If the agency rate does not work and the direct rate does, hire direct. Waiting for a bigger budget helps nobody.
  • You only need a few hours a week. Below roughly 20 hours, most agencies are not interested and the overhead is not worth it to you either.

When an agency earns the difference

  • You have never done this before. The most expensive offshore hire is the first bad one, and first-timers make predictable mistakes in selection.
  • The role needs real judgement. Executive assistant, bookkeeper, transaction coordinator. Selection matters more than sourcing, and screening for judgement is a skill.
  • The work cannot stop. If a day of missed coverage costs you clients, you need cover arranged before you need it.
  • You are hiring more than one person. The overhead of doing this yourself multiplies; the agency’s does not.
  • Compliance makes you nervous. Contractor classification, 13th month pay, statutory holidays, payment rails. All manageable, none of it obvious.

The Philippine specifics that surprise foreign employers

Whichever route you choose, these are real:

13th month pay. Philippine employees are legally entitled to an additional month’s pay, payable by 24 December. It applies to employees, not to genuine independent contractors — but the distinction depends on how the relationship actually works, not what the contract calls it. Direct hires frequently discover this in November.

Public holidays. The Philippines has a lot of them, and regular holidays carry premium pay for employees who work. Build them into the calendar rather than discovering them.

Paying people. Wise, PayPal and remittance services all work, and all charge. Fees and unfavourable exchange rates quietly erode the headline saving, and the person on the other end usually absorbs the difference unless you agreed otherwise.

Power and connectivity. Home-based workers lose both, regularly. Ask about backup arrangements before it is a Tuesday morning problem.

The comparison that actually matters

Not the hourly rate. The cost of the arrangement failing.

If a bad hire costs you two weeks of frustration and you start again, hire direct — the savings are real and the downside is bounded.

If a bad hire costs you a client, or three months of unnoticed errors in your books, the arithmetic changes completely, and it changes before you have hired anyone.

Frequently asked questions

Is OnlineJobs.ph legitimate?

Yes. It is the largest and most established platform for hiring Filipino remote staff directly, and plenty of long, successful working relationships started there. The risk is not the platform; it is that everything after the introduction is on you.

Can I try direct hiring first and switch to an agency later?

Yes, and plenty of people do. The experience is not wasted either way — you will know far more about what you actually need the second time.

Do agencies mark up a lot?

The gap between what a client pays and what staff receive covers recruitment, employment costs, equipment, management, QA and cover. It is a real cost base, not pure margin. What you should ask any agency is what specifically is included, and then whether you would rather buy those things or do them.

What if I want to hire someone I already found myself?

Some agencies will employ a person you sourced and handle payroll, compliance and management around them. Ask — it is a common arrangement and rarely advertised.
