Upwork alternatives for hiring long-term support staff

· Guides

A small team working together around a laptop in an office

Upwork is very good at what it was built for: finding someone to do a defined piece of work, once. Ongoing support roles are a different problem, and people usually discover the mismatch around month three.

Why the model strains on ongoing roles

Freelancers are optimising for a portfolio, not for you. A good one is managing five clients. Your Tuesday emergency competes with four other Tuesday emergencies, and you have no claim on the outcome.

There is no continuity when they leave. They will leave — that is how freelancing works. Your processes leave with them, and you restart the whole cycle.

Nobody covers absence. Illness, holiday and family emergencies mean the work stops.

Fees and rates rise for long engagements. A model built around finding new work each month is not the cheapest way to buy the same forty hours every week for two years.

Screening is entirely yours. Reviews and job success scores tell you someone completed contracts. They do not tell you whether this person will exercise judgement inside your business.

None of that is a criticism of Upwork. It is a project marketplace being used as a staffing solution.

The four alternatives

1. OnlineJobs.ph — direct hiring, lower cost, more work

A job board for Filipino remote workers. You post, screen, hire, pay and manage.

Cheaper than everything else here. You take on screening, payroll, replacement risk and the absence of any cover.

Right for you if you have managed remote staff before and the role is straightforward. We wrote an honest comparison against using an agency, including where direct hiring genuinely wins.

2. VirtualStaff.ph — marketplace with payroll rails

Marketplace model with a subscription, plus payment and compliance tooling layered on. Less admin than pure direct hiring, still your responsibility to screen and manage.

3. A staffing agency — screening, employment and continuity

The provider recruits against your brief, employs the person, and handles payroll, equipment, quality assurance and cover.

More expensive per hour than direct, and that is the point. You are buying the parts of the job you would otherwise do yourself.

Right for you if it is your first offshore hire, the role requires judgement, or the work cannot stop when someone is unwell. iFOVS works this way; so do Virtual Coworker, 20four7VA and MCVO Talent.

4. Employer of record — you manage, they employ

You find and manage the person; an EOR handles employment, payroll and local compliance.

Right for you if you have already found someone you want but do not want to set up an entity or manage foreign payroll.

The cost comparison people get wrong

The honest arithmetic is not hourly rate against hourly rate. It is:

Direct hiring: the rate, plus 10–15 hours of your time screening, plus payroll admin, plus the cost of doing it all again if they leave in month three.

An agency: a higher rate, and none of the above.

Which is cheaper depends entirely on what your own hour is worth and how much a gap in coverage costs you. For some businesses direct hiring is clearly right. For others the maths flips the first time someone leaves without notice.

Our cost calculator sizes the comparison against a local hire, and the cost guide breaks down market rates by role.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move an Upwork freelancer to a long-term arrangement?

Often, yes, subject to Upwork’s own terms on taking contracts off-platform. An employer of record is the usual route if you want to formalise it.

Is Upwork more expensive than hiring direct in the Philippines?

Generally, once platform fees are counted, and the gap widens on long engagements.

What about Fiverr?

Same category as Upwork and more project-oriented still. Good for one-off deliverables, poor for ongoing roles.

How long should hiring take?

From a clear brief to candidates in front of you should be days. We present three within 72 hours. Three weeks to find anyone at all tells you something about a provider’s bench.
